Anchorseal, log and timber sealer, wax to prevent checking

Anchorseal Wax Properties

Anchorseal is a stable wax and water emulsion, sealer, used for sealing the end of logs and timber.

  • Appearance: Anchorseal is a viscous sealer, white liquid wax (until pigmented)
  • Viscosity: 2000 cps. (wax, same as latex paint)
  • Weight: Anchorseal is packaged in two sizes, 470 lbs./55 gallon drum; 45 lbs./5 gallon pail
    • (215 kg./205 liter drum; 21 kg./19 liter pail)
    • Specific Gravity: 0.95
  • Wax Clean-Up: Use hot, soapy water (not solvents)

Anchorseal Storage, wax upkeep, sealer maintainability

Just like water-based paint, Anchorseal is temperature sensitive and care must be taken to not expose Anchorseal wax sealer to temperatures below 32°F. For cold weather conditions, winterized sealer products are available from Anchorseal. We recommend storing Anchorseal wax sealer in a controlled environment, above 50°F, for trouble-free use.

Anchorseal, Environmentally Friendly Wax Emulsion

Anchorseal is essentially non-toxic wax sealer and non-hazardous. Anchorseal wax is not combustible until dried and then has a flash point in excess of 400° F/205°C.

Anchorseal Wax Sealer Benefits

Anchorseal wax and sealer stops most log and timber end checking before it begins. The sooner wax end sealer is applied to log and timber, the more effective the sealer will be. Depending on the log or timber species, 5 - 20% of your log and timber can be saved by using Anchorseal immediately after sawing.

Superior Wax, End Sealer Quality, Checking Protection

Anchorseal is known in the foresty industry as the best quality sealer and most stable wax emulsion coating for timber and log. For two decades, Anchorseal has been the sealer of choice in the timber and log industry.

Proven Log and Timber End Sealer, Prevents Checking

Independent studies* have concluded that log timber end coating greatly benefits logs by reducing timber degrade. In freshly sawn timber, end checking is reduced. In freshly cut log, end checking and blue stain is reduced.

Virginia Tech Research Wax Emulsion Sealer, Prevents Checking

Research found that 5/4 green timber that was wax end coated with sealer within three days of sawing produced 4% greater yield by reducing log end checking.

Research in Timber End Checking at University of Wisconsin, Proves Wax Emulsion Sealer

Study was conducted on freshly sawn log. The results indicate that wax end coating kept log and timber fresh and more valuable by reducing end checking by six inches and reducing log staining by 9 inches after weeks of storage.

Wax Application, Sealer use on log and timber, protecting against checking

  1. Apply wax as soon as possible after cutting or end trimming, to all end grain surfaces that may result in checking. On valuable veneer log, areas where bark is removed should also be treated.
  2. Apply sealer with a brush, roller, or with spray equipment. If a sprayer is used, the tip must be large enough to accommodate the thick end wax emulsion of Anchorseal.
  3. Anchorseal should be applied "to the drip": apply as much as the timber or log will hold, until it begins to drip slightly. If there is no dripping, it may be too little. If there is heavy dripping, it is too much.
  4. Valuable logs will benefit from a heavy application of Anchorseal end wax. Logs under 24"/60cm can be coated "to the drip" (see 3.). Logs over 24"/60 cm should be coated with wax emulsion heavily, perhaps twice within 15 minutes. The increase in value/yield from the larger logs will be worth the little extra time and Anchorseal used.

Anchorseal has an anti-freeze additive, which lowers the freezing point by a few degrees but essentially it prevents it from sustaining damage from freezing and continues to protect against checking. Without the anti-freeze, freezing temperatures will cause it to degrade into a gooey wax lump. So "freeze-stable" is the proper nomenclature.

Anchorseal can be applied and will stick to frozen logs or timber while still working to protect against checking problems.
