Arbortech Pro 4 information

The following information answers common general, technical and fitting queries about the Arbortech Pro 4 Woodcarver. The Pro 4 Woodcarver supercedes the Pro 2 and Pro 3 models. If you have these blades, this section is still relevant to those superceded models.

If you need further information, or if you have a question that isn't answered here, please email us at info@aloghomestore.com

General Questions:

What makes Arbortech blades so safe to use?

Arbortech shaping blades are designed with safety in mind. A chip limiter before each blade restricts the depth of cut to 1mm and prevents kick back or grab making them controllable, smooth and easy to use.

Designed to German BG Safety Standards (recognised to be the most stringent in the world), the blades rotate away from the user, so that in the unlikely event of loss of control, the tool pulls away - not towards - the user.

The Woodcarver is manufactured from a single piece of steel meaning there are no loose moving parts, or chains to break and fly off.

What does my grinder need to fit the Woodcarver Pro Kit?

  • A metal guard that can be rotated and fixed to 45
  • An auxiliary handle
  • The on/off switch positioned on the top or side
  • At least 550 Watts power
  • WARNING: The Woodcarver must be used with the Arbortech Pro-guard supplied in the Pro Kit.

How do I fit the Pro 4 Woodcarver Kit to my angle grinder?

Set the angle grinders original metal guard at approximately 45degrees to the body of the grinder as in Diagram 1.

Mount the Woodcarver to the grinder in the centre of the metal guard, using the washers provided where appropriate. Ensure that the Woodcarver will be rotating away from the user when in use.

Fit the angle grinder's auxiliary handle making sure that it is positioned on the right side of the grinder. Fixing the auxiliary handle on the wrong side of the grinder, Diagram 2, causes the disc to rotate in the wrong direction with subsequent loss of control and possible injury.

Fit the Pro Guard following the fitting instructions on the Pro Guard pages. Diagram 3.

Do I need to have the grinder's handle fitted?

YES! If your angle grinder is an older model and only has one handle port, now is the time to invest in a new one. The Pro Guard is attached using the auxiliary handle port, which leaves one left to attach the grinder's handle. Do not use an angle grinder fitted with Arbortech shaping blades if you cannot fit both the Pro Guard AND the grinder handle.

How do I sharpen the Woodcarver blade?

How do I sharpen the Woodcarver?

Sharpening the Woodcarver is easy, however depending on your model blade, the method is different. Pro 3 & Pro 4 Woodcarver Blades can be sharpened using a standard round file. Pro 2 Woodcarver has been hardened to approximately 62°RC and is too hard to be resharpened using a standard chainsaw file. An aluminum oxide stone must be used to re-hone the edge. (this is only for those of you who might still possess on of these older models).

There are two methods of sharpening using the Aluminium Oxide accessories provided for this purpose:

Sharpening Stick (By Hand)

The Sharpening Stick is used to sharpen or hone the cutting edges on a frequent basis. It is hand held and used in a similar fashion to sharpening the teeth of a chainsaw (see diagram at left).

Think safe - disconnect the power before sharpening the Woodcarver. Place the sharpening stick into the hooked profile of each tooth - following the manufactured angle (approximately 35º). See diagram at left. Draw the stone backwards and forwards to re-hone the edge. Several strokes is usually enough.

NOTE: If the tooth is badly worn so that the cutting edge has been roundedover, then use the Power Sharpener tips WCB040 to quickly regrind anew clean crisp profile, then maintain the edge with the hand stone.

Power Sharpener (for use in an electrical drill)

The Power Sharpener is a faster method to resharpen or re-profile the Woodcarver teeth. They are attached to your electric drill (or any tool that has a chuck) by inserting the metal shaft directly into the chuck.

Think Safe - disconnect the power before sharpening the Woodcarver. Fit the Power sharpeners onto your chosen power unit (electric drill, chainsaw sharpener, etc). Place the Power Sharpener into the hooked profile of each tooth - following the manufactured angle (approximately 35degrees). See diagram at left.Turn on the drill and sharpen each tooth for a few seconds to re-hone the edge.

I want to get a dedicated angle grinder for the Woodcarver, what should I look for?

The Woodcarver Pro Kit fits most 4" (100mm) and 41/2" (115mm) angle grinders. When choosing an angle grinder to suit the Woodcarver, you should look for the following features:

  • A metal guard that can be rotated and fixed to 45 degrees
  • An auxiliary handle
  • The on/off switch positioned on the top or side
  • At least 550 Watts power
  • WARNING: The Woodcarver must be used with the Arbortech Pro-guard supplied in the Pro Kits.
