Carving Bar Application Guide

Chain saw carving bars are popular with both wood (logs, signs etc.), and ice carvers as well as log builders for performing "plunge" cuts and detail work with minimal kickback.

Dime sized tips are for use with 1/4" pitch chain only. ( Not all the saws listed below can be converted to 1/4 pitch).
Quarter sized tips can accommodate 1/4" pitch,  325, and 3/8 low pro "pitch" chain.  

Carving bars are available in several brands: All are available in dime tip and quarter size tip profiles

  • Cannon (black in color)
    • Cannon manufactures high quality bars of all types
    • Canadian made.
    • Lengths from 8" to 20".
  • Chain Bar (battleship gray in color)
    • Chain Bar made their name building unusually long and/or unusual bars. Carving bars were a natural progression for them.
    • US made.
    • Lengths from 12" to 18"
  • GB (off-white with "Titanium Carver" printed on sides)
    • A newer addition to the North American market.
    • Australian made.
    • Lengths from 12" to 18".
    • GB is also experimenting with some "sprocket nose" carving bars. (Mostly available for 1/4 pitch chain).

Note: 

Carving Bars are made to fit as many saws as possible in order to make their manufacture a profitable one. Sometimes a bar won't be an exact fit, such as you expect when ordering a standard chain saw bar that is made for that specific bar mount and not trying to adapt to fit several bar mounts. Thus, you may find you need to do a bit of filing in the "bar" groove to get the carving bar to slide over the chain saw bar studs. Doesn't happen often and if we know of the problem we try to remember to adjust the bar prior to shipping.

Chain Bar Universal Mount bars

Chain Bar Universal Mount bars fit the following Oregon (a brand of bar),  bar motor-mount numbers: A041, K041, T041, A095, K095, Z095, T095.  
(Essentially, they have two styles, one for the Stihl D025 mount and another to fit all the other saws listed).
(The Oregon bar part numbers have 10 digits and are a combination of numbers and letters. The last 4 digits designate the bar mount style.)

GB brand carving bars fit the following Chain Saws:

GB bars have the distinction of being available in both dime and quarter size tips, as well as a sprocket type tip. They also make a special bar to fit the larger Stihl D025 mount.

The regular GB carving bars fit all the saws listed above under the Universal Mount list. Additionally, this bar will also fit the Oregon A074 bar mount which is for the smaller Stihl Saws. 

Stihl, (Oregon bar mount A074) fits the following: 009, 010, 011, 012, 015, 017, 018, 019, 021, 023, 025, E10, E14, E180 and most derivatives of these numbers, (e.g. 019T).  Note: 024, 026 take the D025 mount listed below.

  • Stihl, (Oregon bar mount #D025), fits the following: Listed under Universal Mount bars near the bottom of the list on the order page.
    • #' 024,026,028,028 super, 029, 030, 031, 032, 034, 036, 038,038 super magnum, 039, 040, 041, 042, 044, 045, 046, 048, 056, 064, 066, E15, E20, E220

Cannon brand carving bars fit the following Chain Saws:

  • Cannon provides carving bars in three different bar mount styles. Theirs are classified as:
    • C1: which fits, Oregon bar mount numbers A041, K041, A095, K095, A064, A061, A318, A074. Essentially the same as the GB list above.
    • H1: D007, D009, D010, D023, D024, D025, D196. Basically these bars are larger in shape where they bolt to the saw, Larger Husqvarna saws fit into this classification (although not many carve with the larger saws).
    • S1: Fits the larger Stihl (Oregon D025) mount.

Basically; Cannon provides about the largest assortment of carving bars.

Well keep adding to the list and clarifying terms as time allows. 
If you don't find you saw (make/model) on any of these lists we probably don't have it as the lists are becoming fairly complete.

Head to the list of 1/4 pitch spur sprockets. This will give you a good idea of what saws are convertible to 1/4 pitch spur sprockets.
