- Finish
(for exterior log &
twig furniture)
The
basics of log furniture, rustic furniture, twig
furniture and log railing building are remarkably similar.
As shown in
Dan
Macks' "Rustic Furniture Workshop", you start by making a log
ladder which gives you the skill to make a log, rustic or twig chair,
log railings, log furniture, log bookcase and so on.
On these
pages
you'll find all the log and rustic furniture
building tools from drill powered tenon cutters to router driven tenon
cutters
(makers), to
Milwaukee super hole shooter drills and Milwaukee self feed bits
If you're new to this
endeavor we suggest you start by
reading the
article: Creating Your Own
Log Railings and Furniture by Tracy Johnston
and a short article HERE .
Then take a look at the many Log and
Rustic Furniture
Making Books
for how-to, project plans, and design ideas.
Finally, the use of a
moisture meter will insure that tight fits remain tight.

Tenon
Cutters
Tenon
Cutters are now available in a Router
powered style (LogMan)
as
well as the well known Drill
powered
style.
In
the power tenon cutters that are drill powered, we currently offer
three
brands of professional quality tenon cutters. NW
Barker
LumberJack
All
brands of drill powered tenon cutters will work in
our Drill Carriage and Clamping
devices to allow you high volume capabilities in your log and
rustic furniture building.
Here's
a link to more
info on
tenon cutters.

Tenon Cutters -
Drill powered
These
Tenon Cutters can be mounted on either 1/2" (all brands), or
3/4"
drills (NW & Barker).
All sizes work best with a 3/4" drill. For any
sort of production rustic furniture building we recommend using the Milwaukee
Super Hole Shooter Drill with the
Drill Carriage
and Clamping Device. The Drill Carriage is preset to accept
the Milwaukee
Super Hole Shooter Drill "out of the box". Smaller tenon sizes can
employ a high quality 1/2" drive drill in a low volume production
setting.
The size of your wood stock will determine
the
cutter head needed. (As well as the diameter of the tenon
required). Tenon
lengths can be adjusted, (by moving the shaft in or out), and widths
slight
adjusted by judicious movement of the blades (to accomodate variations
in wood
being drilled and the actual width of the drill bit being used).
High carbon steel blades in both
the single blade
style, (available only in the some Barker models), and the double blade
style are re-sharpenable many times and should last for several hundred
cuts between
sharpenings in good clean wood.

Barker
Tenon Cutters
st0100-barker
- Heavy
duty design. Made of machined high-grade aluminum in either single or
double blade styles.
- Barker
tenon cutters can be used with either a 1/2" or a 3/4",
drill. (Order the appropriate Shaft diameter)
*We recommend the 3/4" drill for the double blade tenon cutters - they
cut faster and require the additional power of the 3/4" drill. The 3/4"
drill also works well for all single blade cutters.
*A heavy duty 1/2" drill should only be used with the single blade
tenon cutters, or the smallest size tenon cutters. They require less
power to run and take about 4 seconds longer to cut the same tenon.
- A
Note on single and double blade tenon cutter differences:
Single blade cutters take
approximately 5 seconds longer to cut a tenon than double blade
cutters. Thus, single blade cutters are easier on the drill and create
less torque to the material being tenoned, which means it's easier to
secure the material. For the 2 newest and largest sizes, we
offer these only on a 3/4" shaft but with a single blade--this
combination will be easier on your drill.
Double blade tenon cutters cut
faster, which could be a factor in a shop with several people vying for
use of the drill and cutter. Smaller
3/4" and 1" tenon
cutters are only available with double cutter blades. 1-1/2" size
through the 2-9/16" size cutters are available in either single or
double cutter blades. The largest sizes are only available in
3/4" shaft, single blade style.
- All
aluminum Barker cutters have built in levels.
