Our French Connection
Awhile back, we had the pleasure of visiting fellow log building enthusiasts, (builders, owners, authors), Thierry and Marie-France Houdart in France. Their company, Les Bois de la Combe Noir, continues to produce handcrafted log homes, but the couple's efforts recently have focused on reviving the craft of log building in France and re-educating the public and government about the structural excellence and energy efficiency of log structures. To this end they have created the organization "Bois Sacre" and have published several books. We are happy to be able to offer them to you now on this side of the Atlantic.
Thierry, (pronounced Terry), has an interesting method of building solo. He has a vest that he has attached the radio controls for his portable tower crane. This crane can be towed behind a pickup truck, and can be erected and ready to use in under one hour by one person. (You have to see it to believe it). As logs arrive on the reerect site, Thierry proceeds to hook on the first log. He then sends the crane the radio signal commands and as the tower crane is slowly swinging the log from truck to building, Thierry is climbing down off the truck, over to the building, up on the wall, and ready to receive the log. Possibly, the most efficient solo company we've ever seen. (They no longer manufacture these mobile, one person, tower cranes. We've only seen them for sale used, in Europe).

We also get the French Gouge from here. Blade and shaft are one solid piece. No wooden handle to replace. This is a tool that will outlast you.
