carrier". This is a great way for two people to move logs. The swivel
above the tongs makes for easier maneuvering. You can use 2 Timber
totes with 4 people for longer heavier logs.
Hint:
If you're using one "tote" with two people on a heavy log, try lifting
closer to one end and allowing the other end to drag along the ground.
(when appropriate). This will lessen the weight load on the two of you
doing the lifting. |

whether you need lifting or skidding/loading tongs.
Lifting tongs are
used whenever a log will be lifted above 5' off the ground, (or above
anyone's head). These tongs are rated for lifting weights.
Skidding/loading tongs are used to drag and load/unload logs. They are
less expensive than lifting tongs.
Select a size that is
larger than your logs. For example, if you are building with 12"
diameter logs, use 20" or 25" tongs.

Log Cleats
To secure your logs while you peel or notch. Triangular shaped and each
cleat has 5 points - 4 on the "leg" to grip the lower log and 1 on the
upper facing part to grip the upper log. Used as a set, they come
attached to each other with a cord.
Dimensions are 3" deep, 2" wide, and 3" tall, (short),
or 5" tall, (long).
Normally, one set is used at each end of a log to secure the log for
scribe, (when the points are toward the log), or to turn a log, (when
the points face away from the log).
Note: Use care when working with logs,
particularly natural taper logs which often have a bow that you may be
attempting to "hold" up and out. Do not remove a cleat from one end of
a log and assume the cleat at the other end will hold the log, without
first determining if all persons are out of the potential danger area.
As with all tools, the responsibility for their ultimate use and safety
is up to the operator. You're the operator.
