The basics of log furniture, rustic furniture, twig furniture and log railing building are remarkably similar. As shown in Dan Macks' "Rustic Furniture Workshop", you start by making a log ladder which gives you the skill to make a log, rustic or twig chair, log railings, log furniture, log bookcase and so on.

On these pages you'll find all the log and rustic furniture building tools from drill powered tenon cutters to router driven tenon cutters (makers), to Milwaukee super hole shooter drills and Milwaukee self feed bits

If you're new to this endeavor we suggest you start by reading the article: Creating Your Own Log Railings and Furniture by Tracy Johnston
and a short article HERE .
Then take a look at the many Log and Rustic Furniture Making Books for how-to, project plans, and design ideas.

Finally, the use of a moisture meter will insure that tight fits remain tight.

Drill Carriage/Holders and Clamping/Holding Devices

Barker Carriage and Clamp       NW Carriage and Clamp

Drill Carriage is actually two components (in the case of the Barker and NW drill carriages). One is the slide that is bolted to your work bench. The other is the holder for the drill. The drill holder and drill then glide along the carriage slide toward the log material that is secured in the clamping device.

The Manual Clamping Device is designed to easily center material to line up with the drill chuck. Clamps on each side of the round stock move toward the centering point simultaneously which keeps your log stock centered on the tenon cutter head.
Although you can clamp your material in a wood vice and "free hand" the drill into the material to create the tenon, furniture makers have reported a return on investment in under 30 days using the Carriage and Clamping device when compared to using the Tenon Cutters without Carriage and Clamp. If you have more than a single project or two, you'll find the clamp and carriage systems nearly indispensable.

        LumberJack Log & Tenon Mates

The LumberJack system is different than the 2 products discussed above. First the drill holder is a 1 piece unit that both clamps to the drill, and slides inside the square tubing frame of the Clamping component.

The Clamp (Log Mate) is set up to allow it to be used to secure material for drilling and peeling as well as the standard tenon making.

LumberJack Log & Tenon Mate System

The Log Mate secures log in a horizontal position with a vice-like grip. Made of powdercoated tubular steel for years of service. Quick ratcheting strap handles up to 6" diameter logs. It's possible to use this to secure material for peeling, drilling, and in conjunction with the Tenon Mate, cutting tenons.

The Tenon Mate slides into rails of the Log Mate. Holds drill and tenon cutter in a fixed position for consistent cutting, increased safety and productivity. Drill and Log Mate are sold separately. (What is shown is both the Log Mate and Tenon Mate on the right).

Attach legs to the Log Mate and you won't need a table. Can be bolted to floor with built-in brackets. Log Mate and drill sold separately. (Shown without legs in photo on the right)

Note the pipe handle attached to the drill on the underside...You adjust the height of the drill (thus the tenon cutter), by raising or lowering to center on log material prior to cutting tenon

Barker Drill Carriage and Clamp System

st0104-barker-package.jpg (9042 bytes)Similar to the NW system (shown below),  except yellow in color and the "glide" system is slightly different (not better or worse as far as we can determine, just different).
Stoutly built system that should give years of good service, even in a production shop.

Drill Carriage-Barker
st0102-carriage-barker

Drill carriage can be ordered to hold either of the following:
3/4" drive Milwaukee Super Hole Shooter Model #1854-1 or the:
1/2" Milwaukee Drill Model #1663-20
(The Milwaukee #1660-1 is a single speed version of the #1663.20...It can be made to work. You'll need to bend the metal clamp on the carriage so the "trigger" on the drill is accessable).

For any sort of production work we recommend the 3/4" drive drill for its durability.

Please choose 1/2" or 3/4" carriage when ordering.

This is a two part unit. The "clamping system" for the drill and the "slide" that the drill moves along toward the log material.

NW Drill Carriage and Clamp System

Similar to the Barker except black in color and the "glide" system is slight different (not better or worse as far as we can determine, just different).
This is the system we've sold for several years and received nary a complaint as to the quality of construction.

Milwaukee Super Hole Shooter Drill

Model 1854-1
This drill fits the above drill carriage clamp. Even professional furniture and railing makers will work week after week without wearing this one out.

3/4" drive, 10 amp, 120v ac/dc 350 rpm reversing. Triple gear train, helical cut heat treated gears, chrome moly alloy steel, pre-lubricated ball bearings, extra long switch handle and pipe handle, glass filled nylon spade and switch handles, Jacobs taper spindle.

Note: This is not a drill that you pick up and hold while drilling without bracing yourself and the drill properly. Do yourself a favor and listen to what we're saying here. Use this drill in the Drill Carriage, listed above, brace the drill in a manner that it "won't get away from you", or figure on "free-handing", and your day will come. (sprained wrist, bruised ribs).
