Power Tools for Log Building and Timber framing

Timberframers who started their careers with mallet, chisel, and hand drill as a means of creating the mortises and tenons for their frames appreciate the increase in productivity and ease of use when using these specialty power tools. As with all tools, keep the cutting edge sharp to allow the tool to work without undue load on the motor or yourself. 

Notches, or cuts through-holes in wood quickly. 
Most commonly used to cut mortises for Timber Frames.  
Large adjustable vise base for attaching firmly onto beams from 3-1/8" up to 12-1/8" thick. Pivots to 3 cutting positions. 
Comes with 18mm, (23/32), chain. Other sizes available from 19/32" to 1-3/16".

NOTE: The beam cutter does not require as much lubricant as a standard chain saw because it runs at a much slower RPM. We recommend that you spray it with a WD-40 or Silicon Spray about every 15 or 20 cuts. As with all sprocket tip saw bars remember to keep the sprocket at the tip of the bar properly lubricated.

Chain sharpens with a 5/32" file.

Sanders and Grinders

Generally speaking, if it's called a Sander/Polisher the tool is variable speed and runs at lower speeds (300-3400 in the larger 7" and 9" units and up to 10,000 rpm in the 4-1/2" unit). 
A grinder style will operate at a higher single speed, (10,000 rpm plus), and is the choice for many pros when using abrasive discs, (circular sanding discs), for smoothing/profiling scarfs, opening cuts, and log ends .

Used to smooth away excess wood fiber from your logs caused by chemical stripping, pressure washing, or corn cob blasting. 
Not a metal cup brush, rather a nylon bristle impregnated with (80) grit so you don't have to worry about potential rust stains on your walls. 
Bristles will flare out when in use and can reach in and clean notch areas. 
Also great for reaching the "lateral" area where one round log sits upon another. 
The bristles on these cup brushes are either round or square. 
The square is considered to be more aggressive. 
Rated to 6000 rpm. (try at +/- 1500 rpm). 
Works best on a Variable Speed Sander/Polisher.

Sanding & Grinding Discs

Abrasive discs are used in a variety of circumstances from sanding log ends and knots to cleaning up chainsaw marks in the logs and touching up bevel cuts.  
Warning: Wearing face shield or safety glasses is always recommended when performing any sanding or grinding task. This is also a job that requires a good set of leather gloves.

These chisels are normally used with the Makita demolition hammer Model #HM0810B for chipping, edging and channeling in concrete.
